PRESERVATION AND SAFEGUARDING

As preservation measures to be implemented in the short and medium term by the Municipality of Castelo Branco for the valorization and safeguard of the traditional process of production of the Castelo Branco Embroidery, the following must be highlighted:

More than defending a specific process of the passage of the design to the fabric (risk), we must insist on the quality of the design, a necessary condition for the good execution of embroidery. Thus, there is an urgent need to train embroiderers in higher quality designs. Perhaps compiling good designs in a "Book of Drawings" could be an important working tool that qualifies today's embroidery and diversifies the possible approaches, without de-characterizing the production.

To promote, among the embroiderers (present and future), the certification process of the embroidery of Castelo Branco, through directed actions that attest the importance of the legalization of the handmade work and its qualification. The implementation of the certification process of the Castelo Branco Embroidery is already a reality since 2018 and ensures that the embroidery associated with this territory and its embroiderers are recognized as certified artisanal producers, thus ensuring the provenance and differentiation of this production, safeguarding that the innovation actions will not de-characterize its specific identity and allowing the placement of this artisanal production in more attractive and advantageous markets for its producers. This certification process implied the registration of the GI - Geographical Indication at the INPI (Institute of Industrial Property) guaranteeing that the name associated to this handmade production - Bordado de Castelo Branco - is linked to its territory of origin, guaranteeing its specificity and differentiation.

The assumption of embroidery as Castelo Branco's ex-libris and its integration in the activities developed by the City Hall in the scope of the candidacy to "UNESCO Creative City" in the category of handicraft and popular arts with actions directed to the general public, to scholars and researchers, and to tourists, allow a wide approach to this art and its diffusion through the Embroidery Interpretation Center, the workshops themselves, and its embroiderers.

Creation of a workshop for the restoration and rehabilitation of embroidery - the existing workshop/laboratory in the Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum currently has only one employee (Júlia Bispo), who is close to retirement age, so it is urgent to find a way to continue the work developed there. Training in restoration, silk dyeing and embroidery is needed for a group of embroiderers who can ensure the maintenance of the workshop and even make it economically viable in the future.

Training actions/courses - following what is currently being done, it is necessary to continue to invest in the training and requalification of embroiderers, in order to introduce the embroidery of Castelo Branco to younger people who can make a profession out of it, as well as to work with the existing embroiderers with a view to their requalification and updating.

Creation of a commercial space exclusively dedicated to the embroidery of Castelo Branco in the center of the city, where the embroiderers that are not part of the Interpretation Center and that have their productions certified can sell their productions and promote their work.

Continuation of the municipality's investment in the organization of colloquia, seminars, exhibitions, and editions on this emblematic art of Castelo Branco, fostering scientific research in the area.

Continuation of the work with schools and youth/children groups, in order to make them aware of the local importance and specificity of embroidery. Publishing of didactic materials (books, games, kits, etc).
