SEDA MUSEUM

The Silk Museum was created to make known to the general public the History of Silk production in Portugal, the life cycle of the Silkworm, the conventional and high-tech applications - namely in Biology and Medicine - that can be made from the use of this little known and yet invaluable product. For decades, the APPACDM of Castelo Branco has had the largest national sericultural production, having developed extremely relevant partnerships with the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) and with the University of Padua in Italy.

The Museum consists of five rooms. In room one, information is given about silk, starting from the general to the particular (APPACDM). The visit begins with the presentation of the Silk Road, the silk culture in our territory, even before the formation of nationality, the silk culture in the Beira Interior and finally, with a chronological analysis, the silk activity in APPACDM. Room two - the Audiovisuals Room - is the space destined to the projection of a short film about silk production, with the collaboration of different partners. The remaining rooms are called: From Bug to Yarn; From Yarn to Fabric and From Fabric to End Product. In these spaces one can understand the silk production process, get to know some of the instruments used in the traditional method of obtaining silk, and appreciate some silk objects.

There is also a store where you can buy products made from silk, and a small bar where you can have a drink under the shade of a mulberry tree. In the Technical Room, the youngest visitors can do activities to consolidate the knowledge and information presented during the visit, in an experience accompanied and tutored by specialized staff.
