PANELS and FRAGMENTS
The Certification required a minimum size of 100cm x 75cm for the panels, in order to prevent the miniaturization of the design, which was seen as disqualifying and demeaning. It was then that, in order to solve the issue posed with the size of the panels, the concept of the "fragment" was created, an embroidery that copied "representative parts of a quilt in full scale". The intention was to create the possibility of presenting, to be certified, significantly smaller embroideries, meeting the embroiderers' need to have more affordable pieces for sale. This requirement proved to be difficult to apply because there were not and there are no drawings available to which they could resort. Likewise, experiments carried out at the Castelo Branco Embroidery Interpretation Center, where several fragments were embroidered, fell short of expectations, confirming the existing difficulty in making the concept operational.
The contact we have had with the embroiderers over the years that the Bordado de Castelo Branco has been certified has made evident their notorious difficulties. As enthusiasts of the certification process they were faced with demands that they could not meet.
